Mini Face and Neck Lift Surgery

Mini Face Lift & Neck Lifts with Mr Hassan Shaaban

Mr. Shaaban worked in the NHS in the field of reconstruction following trauma and cancer surgery. His interest lies in the field of facial, breast and body contouring cosmetic surgery.
Mr Shaaban is a consultant plastic surgeon and is a member of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS), the British Association of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgeons (BAPRAS) and International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (ISAPS).

Sagging, loose skin may not be desirable, but it is part and parcel of the ageing process. As we get older, the skin loses its elasticity and structure, and can affect our self-esteem and confidence.

There are many options available - both surgical and non-surgical - to correct and improve the appearance of ageing, especially on the face and neck. If you are considering surgery, it is important to get as much information as possible before you go ahead, to ensure you’re making the right decision for you.

What is a mini face lift?

Unlike a traditional face lift, a mini face lift involves shorted incisions and is less invasive. The procedure itself takes much less time than a normal face lift, and recovery time is also shorter, making it a preferable solution for many. In total, the procedure takes around 1-1.5 hours and does not require a hospital stay. Most patients will recover from the majority of side effects in 2-3 days, while traditional face lifts usually entail downtime of around 4-5 weeks. It is important to note that a mini facelift will deliver less dramatic results than a regular facelift, however.

Mini face lifts can usually be performed under a combination of twilight sedation and local anaesthetic. Once the area is numb, the surgeon will make a fine incision along the hairline and down the front of the ear.

Next, Mr Shaaban will lift the skin to access and reshape the underlying tissue, before hoisting it up and stitching it into a new position. The skin is then trimmed so there’s no excess, before the wound is closed with stitches.

This procedure usually lasts between 2-4 years. After that point, you may require a repeat procedure.

What is a mini neck lift?

A mini neck lift, or platysmaplasty, is usually performed in conjunction with a mini facelift, helping to lift and restructure the skin and underlying tissue around the neck.

Similarly to a mini face lift, a mini neck lift requires minimal incisions and is performed under twilight sedation and local anaesthetic. Patients can usually go home after the procedure.

.

Who is suitable for mini face and neck lift surgery?

This procedure is an option for those who are looking to improve the overall appearance of their face and neck, but wish to avoid a lengthy downtime and recovery period.

Mini face and neck lift surgery is better suited to those with minor indications, and may have to be repeated in 2-4 years.

Mr Shaaban will only consider performing surgery on those aged 18 years or older.

What types of incisions are there?

The incisions are made just in the hairline allowing for discretion. A further cut is made just in front of the ear, which will become less visible over time, as the scar tissue matures.

Is there any downtime?

Patients are advised to keep their heads elevated on a pillow when they rest for at least two days after the procedure. You may wash the area 48 hours after the surgery, but you should take care when cleaning around the wound. Most bruising will subside after a few weeks, but in some cases swelling remains for some months. Usually it takes around 2-4 weeks for your face to start resembling its normal appearance.

If sutures are used during surgery, some of them may be taken out 7 days after surgery. The remaining sutures will then be removed between 10-14 days after the date of surgery.

You will then be assessed by Mr Hassan 6 weeks after surgery, to ensure the wound is healing correctly. In the meantime, patients have 24-hour access to our medical team who will be able to assist and answer any questions you may have. Every patient will take home tailored care package instructions to follow after surgery, and it is vital this is followed to allow a speedy and full recovery. .

Common Q & A on mini face & neck lift surgery

1.Will I have scars?

You will have small scars along the hairline and just in front of the ear, but the appearance will improve over time.

The healing process is always different from person to person, but the most common side effects with mini face and neck lift surgery include swelling and bruising. You may also experience haematoma, asymmetry, injury to the nerve endings, loss of sensation around the ears, infection or adverse reactions to the anaesthetic. In very rare cases, there’s also a risk of DVT (deep vein thrombosis) and PR (pulmonary embolism). Healing may take longer if you’re a smoker.

Patients can usually go home after the procedure. Once discharged, you will be given a post-operative care package to follow, to ensure your body heals in a timely fashion and you avoid risk of infection
